Wellbeing is a term in which reflects on the positive emphasis on health and can be broken down into six aspects know as environmental, physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual. To achieve a high balance of wellbeing it is vital that a person is able to balance and take care of each aspect effectively.
Health is a state of wellbeing. A person’s health is like see-saw on a daily basis, one must choose to either maintain good health or poor health. In my opinion, good health is when all essential components are met to live a healthy lifestyle. These components include nutritional needs, physical needs and psychological need.
Health, as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (1946), is the “state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
When asked what health and wellbeing meant to them, professionals in the healthcare field and ordinary, or lay, people gave a variety of answers with only a few definitions being based on the medical definition of health. A good work life balance was stated as being important and the ability to live life without restrictions or difficulty.
To me, health is having no health issues such as, illness, sickness or injury. Wellness is a synonym of health, however I would define it as living a happy, healthy lifestyle with little or no health issues. I feel the importance of health should be included in everyones daily lives. The importance of health to me is to live a long, prosperous.
Commodity in health can mean different things in terms of one ability to have a sound health; buying of health services to benefit ones well being. (Seedhouse, 2009) makes one to understand that health can be bought, given, or can even be sold and it careless can be lost. Health is a natural process which is vital, but illness can take place.
Furthermore, this essay has considered and demonstrated many implications for nurses relating to how the concept of health is defined and the importance of maintaining good health and wellbeing for both students, nurses and consequently, patients. With so many different perspectives, it is easy to see why health is a difficult concept to define. The World Health Organisation defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (as cited in Seedhouse, 2001. p41).
At home, good health can be a collective concept for it is also crucial to the well-being of the good family. This means that healthy relationships are required in order for families to function as a single organ. Without health, relationships may fall apart and this can bring both short term and long term damages to how we perceive life.
This definition implies that, health promotion is a holistic concept that emphasizes on the physical, social and mental wellbeing (Piper 2010) The nurse is the health professional that will be involved in promoting Molly’s health and wellbeing through evidence based theory and practice in addition to using various models and approaches (Piper 2009).
For health professionals, understanding the different parts of personal wellbeing may offer insights into how their own work fits into a wider context and how what they do can influence wellbeing.
Health for Indigenous population is not only physical, but also social, emotional and cultural wellbeing of the whole community. However in Australia, there’s a lack of frameworks supporting the meaning of health that are based on Indigenous understanding (Priest et al. 2012).
The definition provides a useful framework for thinking about health and wellbeing in these three domains, but it is important to remember that they are also inter-related, as shown below. For example, think of ways in which social factors such as loss of employment or bereavement can impact negatively on a person’s physical and mental wellbeing.
This essay accepts the definition of wellbeing contained within health and social care standards:- “a subjective stage of being content and healthy”. Psychologists generally agree that wellbeing is multi-faceted and made up of a number of components including Social, Emotional, Cultural, Spiritual, Psychological, Physical, and Environmental.
Subjective wellbeing is predictive of mortality after controlling for initial health. This has been found across a number of health conditions including depression, anxiety, coronary heart disease and cancer. It is estimated that high levels of subjective wellbeing can increase life by 4 to 10 years compared to low levels of subjective wellbeing.
Children's Emotional Well-Being. Wellbeing can be defined as a state where an individual is happy, comfortable or healthy. However, wellbeing is very important and plays a big part on how human beings get on with each other, their; potential, the positivity of their emotions and resilience and also how they find life in general. (Diener, 2009).
